In vim, if you have lines like this:

================================================================================

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, for consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor

	Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, for consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor

================================================================================

And you want paragraphs like this (one evenly indented, one not, wrapped at 28
chars):

================================================================================

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet,
for consectetur adipiscing
elit, sed do eiusmod tempor

	Lorem ipsum dolor sit
	amet, for consectetur
	adipiscing elit, sed do
	eiusmod tempor

================================================================================

...so you do this:
:set tw=28
shift+v
(select both lines in visual)
gq

Result with smartindent on:

================================================================================

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet,
for consectetur adipiscing
	elit, sed do eiusmod
	tempor

	Lorem ipsum dolor sit
	amet, for consectetur
	adipiscing elit, sed do
	eiusmod tempor

================================================================================

Result with smartindent off (:set no smartindent):

================================================================================

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet,
for consectetur adipiscing
elit, sed do eiusmod tempor

	Lorem ipsum dolor sit
amet, for consectetur
adipiscing elit, sed do
eiusmod tempor

================================================================================

The solution is ":set cinwords=" (cinwords specifies the list of words which
will cause smartindent to indent even more; for ordinary text, this feature
should be off.)
