Edit ~/.bash_profile or ~/.profile
and add the following two lines:

export CLICOLOR=1
export LSCOLORS=ExFxCxDxBxegedabagacad

you can use this if you are using a black background:

export LSCOLORS=gxBxhxDxfxhxhxhxhxcxcx
