Sometimes my netbook (Debian 7) seems to not load the usb-storage kernel
module automatically.

When this happens and I stick a USB drive in, it is recognized in dmesg,
but does not get scanned for partitions or recognized as a block device.

The solution to this is:

modprobe usb-storage
